ABOUT THE TESLA POWERWALL
Solarpro recommends the Tesla Powerwall to any customer hoping to become energy independent if it is coupled with a good size solar power system of 6.6kW or more.
Tesla Powerwalls have been installed and operating successfully in Australia since mid-2015. It is an AC coupled battery so it can simply be added to any existing solar power system. It has great features, such as back-up during blackout and you can set the discharge rate and minimum % of discharge.
With the ability to program the batteries priorities you can choose if the Tesla Powerwall should first dispatch electricity into your home, keep the battery in current state of charge or export power to the grid or a VPP.
Improvements and upgrades are made remotely to the Powerwall. For example, where the manufacturer has increases the power rating. The continuous power rating of a battery tells you how much power can be delivered at a constant rate. This means it will also indicate how many appliances the battery can power at the same time.
When the sun shines, Powerwall batteries can provide 8 kW continuous power and 6 kW in the evening and night. A single Powerwall can now power lights, power outlets and 240volt appliances like your fridge, TV, washing machine, and washer all at the same time, so if there is a power outage, you can still enjoy a significant amount of comfort at your home. The Tesla Powerwall is a very popular AC coupled solar storage battery partly because it can very easily be added to an existing solar power system. It also has advanced features including automatic software updates that ensure its ‘brain’ always has the latest technology even if the battery was installed years ago. With sleek good looks as well, it’s a top choice particularly for people who already have a solar power system and are considering a solar battery purchase.

The Powerwall’s warranty is quite typical for lithium-ion batteries, being 10 years. Furthermore, batteries do loose storage capability over the years and after 10 years it is expected that the Tesla Powerwall retains 70% of the initial capacity.
The true life expectancy has many variables such as the depth of discharge, meaning how far do you discharge the battery every time, installation conditions including exposure to hot temperatures and overall operating mode.
On the Tesla app, you are not only checking your solar generation, home consumption and energy export, including the battery’s state of charge at a glance, it also allows you to load shift energy according to your tariff. This enhances your energy savings. You can also take it to the next level by setting it to “Cost Saving” mode and let the computer decide what’s best depending on the weather and your average usage for that day. This battery really lets you step into the future!

Solarpro installed the first Powerwall 2 on the Northern Beaches in 2017, and since then added many more batteries to homes throughout Northern Sydney and the Eastern Suburbs.

The SolarEdge Home Battery is a DC coupled 10kWh solar storage battery. While SolarEdge is best known for their optimised inverters, they have a lot of experience with solar batteries. They were the original battery management system for Tesla. They have close to 100,000 residential systems with batteries from Tesla and LG on them worldwide and they own Kokam, an industry leader in battery chemistry and utility storage.

The AC coupled 10kWh sonnenBatterieEVO can be installed outdoors. Like Powerwall it can be easily added to an existing solar power system. The DC coupled sonnenBattterie Hybrid 9.53 is impressively energy efficient at 98% and expandable from 2.5kWh to 15kWh.
