Pool Heating

Solarpro has been heating pools for over a decade. Over that time we have installed it all, from glued on strip rubber matting to PV panels that heat water. Now we only offer what we think is the best of two technologies that suit all situations. Enclosed Solar heating panels or electric Heat Pumps. Both have unique applications.


What is a Heat Pump and how do they work?

In the simplest of terms, a Heat Pump is just like an air conditioner in heating mode. A fan blows ambient air over an internal titanium heat exchanger. Your pool water is pumped through the heat exchanger absorbing the renewable energy the warmer ambient air has supplied.

Heat Pumps are not new technology. Solarpro installed our first Heat Pump back in 2009. Back then they were noisy, less efficient, and expensive to run. Compared to other forms of electric heating as well as gas they were quite cheap, but we did not have the Smart Solar technology and control we have today. Now Solarpro can install a Heat Pump that can be controlled by a Solar energy system, not only that but they are quieter and more efficient. Of course, Heat Pumps can also be powered by the grid if you do not have a solar system or if the solar is not generating energy. The solar system needs to be sized and designed correctly – we will explain more on this below.


Heat Pumps Make Sense

Did you know you can have 5 months of constant pool heating with a Heat Pump or for the same running cost have only 6 weekends of pool heating with a gas heater? That is, if you remember to turn the gas heater on.

Unlike Solar Pool Heating, with a Heat Pump you can have the pool temperature you want year-round if the unit is sized correctly. Solar Pool Heating only works when the sun is shining. Pool Blankets also greatly assist with pool heating. Heating a pool without a pool blanket is like heating a house without a roof on it. A blanket can reduce heat loss by up to 65%. Without a pool blanket, your Heat Pump will need to be larger and will cost more to run.


Why we use Madimack Heat Pumps

Heat Pumps are not a new technology but the recent advances that Madimack have introduced into their range, for example, The Elite, are industry-changing. Now their Elite Heat Pumps are up to 11dB quieter than traditional Heat Pumps making them the quietest Heat Pumps on the market by up to 20%.

They have also re-designed their Inverter Heat Pump range from the ground up. Instead of the normal two heat transfer pipes, they have designed theirs with three highly efficient pipes giving them more surface area to absorb the ambient renewable energy. This makes them amongst the smallest units available with an exceptional single fan 28kW unit in their range.

Combine your Heat Pump with your Solar System

Madimack’s Heat Pump technology can talk to our Solar technology. It can be integrated with a solar control device that can be programmed so the Heat Pump only operates if there is enough excess solar energy being generated from your rooftop solar system (if you have one). This design should not be an afterthought and should be considered when initially installing either the Madimack Heat Pump or your Solarpro Solar System for the best results. Madimack’s Unique Range

Unique to Madimack, now you can choose where your Heat Pump expels the used air from. Most Heat Pumps only expel the air out of the front of the unit. An important thing to know is fan noise follows the expelled air on a Heat Pump. With the Madimack range, you can choose either front, rear or top expulsion, which provides more flexibility for the installation location of your Heat Pump. The Enclosed Panel Concept

The problem with traditional strip matting solar pool heating is that it is exposed to the wind and takes up a lot of roof space. The enclosed panel concept has the black HDPE heat absorbers enclosed in their own atmosphere. This protects them from heat loss from the wind and the roof and takes up a smaller amount of roof space.

Less Heat Loss From Wind

This fairly simple idea has made a big difference to pool heating. Removing the wind chill effect is very significant to heat retention. An added bonus is they are cockatoo proof too!!

No More Roof Damage!

Many are unaware that it doesn't matter which Solar pool heating system you install, there is a very high chance your roof will be damaged doing it. Strip matting needs to be glued down to your roof, which means debris will get stuck under it and rot/rust. If you go for a rigid panel system chances are the installers will be drilling holes all over your roof to fix the panels down.
Solartherm enclosed panels are different. They are installed like Solar hot water panels and are fixed to the rafters below the tiles and a bracket hangs through the gap making it watertight as well as permanent.

Valuable Roof Space

Solar power is a very obvious and appealing way to gain independence by controlling a free energy supply to run a home. Typically, the more solar systems you want, the more roof space is required. As electricity prices climb ever higher, roof space is becoming increasingly valuable. Solartherm panels only require a small amount of roof space and can be ground-mounted if preferred.

The Solartherm Controller

The controller can be wired in or wireless depending on the application. The wireless version uses its own solar panel to send the signal from the roof. Once there is enough radiant heat from the sun the controller will activate the pump. This ensures there is no wasted electricity and it runs as efficiently as possible. In addition, the solar controller ensures the Solartherm panels are protected all year round. It’s a set and forget system, which makes it very user friendly.
